HOW IT WORKS
Here you will find information regarding the DRA2 assessment and its' components.
Aspects Assessed:The DRA2 is composed of up to 4 components.
1. Reading EngagementThe DRA2, K–3, Student Reading Survey gives teachers an opportunity to assess students’ level of Reading Engagement.. It also encourages students to assume a greater responsibility in setting and achieving relevant reading goals. If students use reading logs or other records of books read, they may refer to this list while completing the survey. This portion of the assessment may be administered individually, in small groups, or with the whole class. Most students will take approximately 15 minutes to complete the Student Reading Survey. 2. Oral Reading Fluency Teachers will record observations of a student’s reading behaviors as well as their responses to any errors they make while reading. 3. Comprehension This component of DRA2, gives students an opportunity to organize and write their thoughts about what they read in upper grades or to orally retell at lower levels. It supports the expectation that students think more deeply and critically about their reading and communicate their ideas orally or in written form 4. Word Analysis Also included with DRA2, is the DRA Word Analysis. This diagnostic assessment provides teachers with a systematic means to observe how struggling and emerging readers attend to and work with the various components of spoken and written words. The information gathered about students’ knowledge and skills in working with words in context and in isolation will help plan instruction for at-risk struggling and emerging readers. The assessment consists of forty word-analysis tasks divided into five strands: 1. phonological awareness 2. metalanguage (language used to talk about printed language concepts) 3. letter/high-frequency word recognition 4. phonics 5. structural analysis and syllabication Teachers are encouraged to use this separate assessment when more indepth information is needed about students to help them attain reading proficiency. Note that the number of tasks students complete will vary based on their previous experiences, strengths, and needs. |
